Chapter Thirteen
Talia
Before I walk inside the building, I sweep my gaze around the ground outside the door. The snow has been disturbed, but any footprints have also been covered up with a new layer a couple inches deep. The doorknob has been knocked off.
Once inside, Iâm glad Hugh waited outside so he didnât hear my gasp at the sight of blood-smeared handprints on the walls on either side of the door. My heart thumps hard as I study the angle. I hate seeing his handprints. This visceral impression left behind makes it all the more real. What happened to him? âThe way his hand prints are facing, he braced himself to kick off the knob,â I say quietly as Calder walks up.
Nodding, he hands me a pair of latex gloves. âPut these on. I want you to check out the room he was held in to confirm itâs what you saw. Hopefully you can help us glean from it.â
I follow Calder, but stop when he squeezes past an automatic machine gun sitting where the hallway turns. He glances back when I donât immediately follow. âItâs okay, Talia. The gun is empty. It canât hurt you.â
My gaze drops to the massive pile of spent shell casings on the floor around the machine gun. Were all those bullets spraying at Sebastian? Feeling a bit lightheaded, I start to lean against the wall, but stop when I see a smear of blood. And now that Calderâs at the end of the hall waiting for me, the smear line goes all the way down the hall, standing out like a beacon. âGod, was he hit, Calder?â
He presses his lips together, then sighs. âBy the spray pattern on the floor in here, it appears someone was hit. I canât confirm for sure if it was Bash. I wish you didnât have to see all this, but we need your analytic mind before we walk back out and call the police to come take the forensic evidence. We need leads so we can keep going. Anything at all that might help us find him.â
Nodding, I take a couple deep breaths to calm the burn of worry in my stomach and follow him into the room. The pool of blood on the floor is all I see at first. I quickly glance around the room, then look at Calder. âThatâs a lot of blood. Combined with what we saw in the hallway, itâs a miracle he made it out of here.â
When he nods his agreement, his expression grim, I swallow. âIt appears he did get out, but the fact we havenât heard from him worries me. Where did he go? Oh God, I hope he didnât get re-captured. With a bleeding wound, heâd need immediate medical attention.â
Calder shakes his head. âIf he was recaptured, it wasnât in that area by the outside door. There are no signs of a struggle in the snow. But I canât explain why we havenât heard from him.â
Unless he canât contact us for some reason.
